Biographical Information

Michael J. Golden earned his certification in practical mechanics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Growing up in a poor Irish family, Golden worked as a mill boy in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He paid for his tuition to MIT working as a sparring partner in the popular boxing rings of the era.

M. J. Golden taught Practical Mechanics at Purdue University from 1884 to 1918. He was named director of practical mechanics in 1890 until he retired from the University in 1918. Golden earned a bachelor and a professional degree of mechanical engineering while teaching at Purdue University. The Michael Golden Shops were named in his honor in 1921.
