Biographical Information

Frederick Noonan was born April 4, 1893 in Cook County, Illinois. He spent his early career as a merchant seaman before working at Pan American World Airways in the 1920s. By the 1930s, Noonan took up flying and transitioning into the role of air navigator. In 1937, he was chosen by Amelia Earhart to be the sole navigator for her second world flight attempt. Noonan disappeared along with Earhart on the way to Howland Island during her second world flight attempt on July 2, 1937.
