Biographical Information

Timothy Leary was born on October 22, 1920 to parents Timothy Leary and Abigail Ferris. He earned his master's degree in psychology from Washington State University and his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of California, Berkeley. Leary began lecturing at Harvard in 1959, while researching "the interaction of dimensions of personality and social relationships". Shortly after, he went on to start the Harvard Psilocybin Project with Richard Alpert, though due to poor experimental practice, the project shut down in 1963. Leary went on to be an instrumental - yet controversial - figure in raising awareness about potential therapeutic uses for psychoactive substances up until his death on May 31, 1996.
