Biographical Information

Simon Peter Rosen was a Purdue University physics professor from 1962 to 1984. Born in London, England in August 1933, he became a naturalized United States citizen in 1972. On leave from the Purdue, he served as a theoretical physicist at two federal agencies, the Energy Research and Development Administration from 1975 to 1977 and the National Science Foundation from 1981 to 1983. He was associate division leader for Nuclear and Particle Physics of the theoretical division at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1983 to 1990. He studied theoretical physics at Merton College at Oxford University, earning a doctorate in 1957. He began his career at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., and later moved to Midwestern Universities Research Association in Madison, WI. From 1990 to 1996. He served as visiting scientist at the Superconducting Super Collider Laboratory and at the University of Sussex, England. He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He spent a year as a NATO Fellow at Clarendon Laboratory in Oxford, England, had been senior science adviser to the Director of the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science starting in 2003, and was associate director of the Office of Science for High Energy and Nuclear Physics from 1997 to 2003. In 2004 he was awarded an honorary degree by Purdue University. He published ninety-two scientific papers. He died on October 13, 2006 at his home in Rockville, MD.
