Includes one publication by Raymond Alvarez of Fairmont WV. Ensign James Show Maddox was a Speech Instructor and Ph.D candidate at Purdue and a native of Fairmont WV. While at Purdue, Mr. Maddox was drafted into the Navy during the Second World War. He was aboard the M. S. Zaandam on November 2, 1942, when it was torpedoed by the German U-boat 174-300. Lt. Maddox survived 77 days at sea with part of his crew in the shark infested waters until he died. The others were rescued after 83 days at sea. His wife, Patrica Heine Maddox was also a Purdue student. This publication highlights the remarkable courage and leadership of Lt. Maddox and his ties to Purdue and West Virginia.
