Historical Information
President Frederick Hovde conceived of a life sciences building for Purdue in 1947, to meet the space needs of several science departments and integrate multiple disciplines into a single building. Planning for the building, then called the “Life Science Building,” began in 1948, with construction initiated in 1951. The finished building was dedicated on September 18, 1959, containing at the time 750 rooms used for classroom instruction, laboratories, and staff offices. Four departments were housed in the building at launch, consisting of Animals Sciences, Agronomy, Biological Sciences, and Botany and Plant Pathology.
On December 14, 1960, following approval from the Board of Trustees, the Life Science Building was renamed to the Lilly Hall of Life Sciences, in honor of the decades of support from the Lilly family of Indianapolis.
