Historical Information
The Rose Bowl is a college football contest traditionally held between teams on the eastern half of the United States and the western half. This event originated as a way to raise money for the Tournament of Roses Parade and gave successful football teams a chance to compete during the postseason. The Tournament of Roses Parade (founded in 1890) and the Rose Bowl contest (founded in 1902) are held annually in Pasadena, California at the start of the new year.
In 1967, the Rose Bowl hosted Purdue University for its first time and the University of Southern California for its fourteenth time. Purdue narrowly won the contest with a final score of 14-13. Purdue’s quarterback at the time, Bob Griese, was commended for his game play and went on to play in the National Football League.
